In Matthew 5:13-16, Jesus said that you are the salt and light of this world.
You are called to do something great with your life. There is a reason why you are here, to be the salt and the light of this world. Sadly enough, many of us aren’t living up to this. Even worse, it has nothing to do with not having the potential to.
The reason why we don’t live up to our full potential is because we feel as though we are in adequate to do so. I want to share a quote with you that has truly touched my life. Nelson Mandela was quoted saying this at an inaugural address:
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, “Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?”
Actually, who are you NOT to be? You are a child of God. Your playing it small doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are born to make manifest the Glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us. It is in every one of us, and as we let our own light shine, we consciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence and light liberates others.
I stand here and ask you the same question. Who are you not to be great? Who are you not to be that light that sits upon a hill for all the world to see? You carry inside of you the same spirit that Jesus did when he was on the earth, and look what He did.
Listen, I don’t know where you got the idea in your head that you weren’t good enough but I’m here to tell you that it’s a lie. You have greatness inside of you. You have something that no one else does. But until you start thinking like that, no one will ever see it. And when you do, as Mandela said, your presence and light will liberate others.
